The National Tax Number (NTN) is issued by FBR (Federal Board of Revenue) to identify taxpayers in Pakistan. Every individual and business required to file income tax returns must have an NTN. For salaried individuals, the CNIC acts as the NTN — you can use it to verify your registration and filer status.
Being an active filer on the Active Taxpayer List (ATL) entitles you to reduced withholding tax rates across banking, property, vehicles, and more. Use this tool to instantly verify your status using your CNIC, NTN, Passport, or Company Registration number.
Is NTN Number Same As CNIC Number?
All Pakistani individual taxpayers will receive National Tax Numbers (NTNs) same as their NADRA-issued CNIC numbers, in accordance with an SRO from the Federal Board of Revenue. People can utilise their CNICs instead of their NTN numbers to file income tax returns because CNIC numbers have now changed to NTN numbers. However, this only applies to individual taxpayers — company NTN numbers, which are made up of a 7-digit number, are issued separately by the FBR.
What Is Filer And Non-Filer?
A fileris a taxpayer whose name is listed on the Federal Board of Revenue's periodically updated Active Taxpayer List (ATL). The filer is also a bearer of an NTN, commonly known as a taxpayer card or tax registration number. A non-filer, on the other hand, is someone who doesn't file tax returns in Pakistan and is subject to higher withholding tax rates on various transactions.
How Can I Register My NTN Number?
Your NTN number can be registered quickly. You can electronically register your NTN on the FBR IRIS portal at iris.fbr.gov.pk if you are an individual. Registration requires a valid CNIC, a SIM registered against your own CNIC, a personal email address, and bank account documentation.
