What is PTA Tax?
PTA tax is the one-time customs duty and regulatory tax paid when registering an imported mobile phone for use on Pakistani mobile networks. Every mobile phone that is brought into Pakistan from abroad must be registered through the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) if it is to be used with a Pakistani SIM card.
The tax itself consists of multiple government duties and taxes that are collected during the registration process. Once the applicable amount has been paid and the device is approved, the phone becomes permanently registered and can be used with all local mobile operators.
Without registration, an imported mobile device may work temporarily, but it will eventually be blocked from accessing Pakistani cellular networks. Wi-Fi functionality continues to work, but calls, SMS, and mobile data using local SIM cards will no longer be available.
PTA Mobile Registration Tax
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) requires all mobile devices to be registered under the DIRBS system. Unregistered devices are eventually blocked from the local network. When you import a mobile phone or purchase one in Pakistan, you must pay a one-time registration tax based on the device value.
The tax varies based on your identification method (CNIC for residents, Passport for visitors) and the declared value of the device. For expensive flagship phones valued over PKR 100,000, a 17% tax on the device value applies regardless of ID type.
Why is PTA Registration Required?
The Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) was introduced to discourage illegal mobile phone imports, reduce tax evasion, and prevent the use of counterfeit or cloned devices. Every imported device must have its IMEI registered before it can continue operating on Pakistani mobile networks.
Registering your device ensures that it remains permanently approved for use with Jazz, Zong, Ufone, Telenor, and other local telecom operators. It also helps verify that the device is genuine and legally imported.

CNIC vs Passport Registration
The PTA allows imported mobile phones to be registered using either a Pakistani CNIC or an eligible Passport. The applicable tax depends on which registration method you choose.
CNIC Registration
- Intended for Pakistani residents.
- Usually carries a higher tax amount.
- Most locally imported phones are registered using CNIC.
- Suitable for users permanently living in Pakistan.
Passport Registration
- Available for eligible travellers entering Pakistan.
- Generally offers lower tax rates than CNIC registration.
- Must meet PTA's passport eligibility requirements.
- Often preferred by overseas Pakistanis bringing personal phones.
Our calculator instantly compares both registration methods so you can see the estimated difference before making a decision.
Registration Deadlines
- On Passport: within 30 days from the first use of the SIM in the mobile phone.
- On CNIC: within 60 days from the first use of the SIM in the mobile phone.

What Affects PTA Tax?
Several factors influence the amount of PTA tax payable on a mobile phone:
- Mobile phone model.
- Declared customs value.
- Registration type (CNIC or Passport).
- Applicable customs duties.
- Government taxes.
- Latest FBR valuation.
- Current regulations and tax policies.
Because government duties may change periodically, the payable amount for the same device can change over time.
Tax rates are subject to change by the PTA. This calculator provides estimates only. For official tax amounts, please verify with PTA's DIRBS system.
